WHS alumni returns from Summer Games
Weslaco High School Class of 2014 graduate Cathryn Carranza was recently in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics serving as an athletic trainer for TEAM USA – Skateboarding. She returned to the States earlier this month after Team USA scoring a silver medal in the Men’s Park Skateboarding and silver and bronze medals in the Men’s Street competition.
“The overall experience was very surreal, difficult to put into words,” Cathryn said. “It was an honor to be able to support my team as they competed on the Olympic stage. I’ll remember this trip forever.”
Her day-to-day schedule consisted of covering practice and competitions from a sports medicine capacity (emergency medicine), providing daily treatments to athletes and collaborating with the medical team to provide the most holistic care to each of the athletes.
“The athletes themselves are celebrities,” she said. “Snoop Dogg was also at our competition, but I only saw him from afar. He brought a great energy to the event.”
Cathryn looks forward to continuing in her role with the USA Olympics organization for the foreseeable future.
Cathryn attended Texas A&M University where she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology. She went on to obtain her Master’s in Athletic Training at the University of Houston. Catheryn is now employed at the Texas Children’s Hospital as a part the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee National Medical Network. Through this partnership, Cathryn has had the opportunity to serve Team USA as an athletic trainer over the past year, traveling over the past year, traveling to various places, such as Italy, Switzerland, Hungary and Argentina.
