WISD FAQ for Parents

To ensure a healthy environment, WISD has invested millions of dollars on safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).  All students will have ample access to: 

• Desk shields

• Masks

• Hand sanitizer

• Hand washing stations  

• Water bottle filling stations  

• Touchless water faucets (currently being installed)  

• HEPA air filters in all classrooms and common areas  

The health and safety of WISD students is our top priority, WISD principals, teachers and staff are working to provide your child with the best academic resources for a successful year.

The District is working to ensure proper social distancing of CDC recommendation of three feet per student to reduce transmission.  We understand that this may not always be possible due to space limitations.  However, other prevention strategies such as proper hand sanitation, and wearing a mask will mitigate the risk.  

TEA guidelines do not require the District to conduct contract tracing.  However, WISD is committed to the safety and well-being of all students.  Each campus has a dedicated COVID response team which will conduct contact tracing if there is a positive COVID case of students and staff.

If your child is identified as being known close contact, you will receive a call from a member of the campus COVID response team who will guide you through the next steps. 

At this time, visitation will be limited to parent conferences and other essential meetings.  Parents will not be allowed in the cafeteria during lunch and breakfast times. 

We prefer you drop off your child accordingly.  However, should your child need extra reassurance the first week of school, you may accompany your child and we recommend that you:

• Wear a mask

• Maintain social distancing 

• Monitor your symptoms.  Do not enter the campus if you are sick! 

Yes, it is. Buses will go back to operating at full capacity. Hand sanitizer is readily available, students in the same household will sit together and daily cleaning will take place after every bus load.  Students will be required to wear masks while on the bus.  All busses are equipped with UV purifier air sterilization system filters.  

Yes.  The Weslaco ISD Food and Nutrition Services Department will provide no-cost meals for all students who return to campus for in-person instruction.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Students will be served breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria and/or classroom, depending on the principal.  Staggered lunch times for elementary schools will be in place to help maintain social distancing.  Middle schools and high schools will have additional lunch periods to minimize large gatherings. Meals may be served in the classroom or cafeteria depending on the campus.

All cafeteria staff will follow enhanced cleaning protocols.  All surfaces will be cleaned between each lunch period.  Hand sanitizer will be available to students before and after lunch and time will be built into the school day for hand washing and sanitizing.  All cafeteria staff will wear masks and social distance.

On-campus testing is available upon request to all asymptomatic students and staff at the school nurse office. The Curative mobile, located at Bobby Lackey Stadium, also offers testing for asymptomatic individuals or to those who have been exposed to a positive case.  Curative is available Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. You may also contact your doctor.

Yes, Weslaco ISD is partnering with local organizations to provide vaccines to staff, students and community.  The district will announce time and locations on social media.
