K-12 Mathematics Instructional Framework
Weslaco ISD was awarded the LASO Cycle 2 Grant for Strong Foundations Planning. Through this initiative, and in partnership with The University of Texas at Austin Meadows Center, the district developed an instructional framework for mathematics grounded in the Texas Education Agency’s Mathematics Research-Based Instructional Strategies (RBIS). These strategies ensure instruction supports a deep understanding of mathematics by balancing conceptual understanding, procedural skill, and fluency; providing adequate depth on key concepts; building coherence across grade levels; and fostering productive struggle to strengthen perseverance and critical thinking.
Grant funding enabled Weslaco ISD to provide high-quality professional learning on the RBIS to teachers and committee members, conduct a review of current instructional materials and practices, create a districtwide rollout plan for the instructional framework, and adopt Bluebonnet Learning, a TEA-approved high-quality instructional material (HQIM) aligned to the RBIS.
