Anika Hovda (pictured at center) hasn’t graduated from high school just yet, but she already signed to play golf for the McNeese State University Cowboys next fall. This is the first letter of intent to be signed for the Weslaco High School Class of 2017. Anika, a three-year WHS golf team member, will be playing Division I golf for the blue and gold of Lake Charles, Louisiana. With the competitive athletic programs offered at Weslaco ISD, more and more high school students are offered scholarships to play their favorite sport at the college level. “Not only does she have amazing golf skills but she also has a great academic standing,” WHS Principal Yvett Morales said.
Weslaco High School softball great Taylor Tafolla (center) has also just secured a spot on the Coastal Bend College team roster, and she hasn’t finalized her graduation invitations. The Coastal Bend Cougars couldn’t wait to sign up the four-year softball Lady Panther.
“Taylor is a leader by example and a wonderful teammate,” Coach Mario Rodriguez said. “She led the softball team last year to the Final Four 6A State finals.
Taylor is a tribute to the Weslaco ISD athletic programs which offer students high-caliber facilities and the opportunities to attend college and compete.
